Secrets of the Shore - Rocking Rock Pools

Learning Objectives

  • To identify and name a variety of common plants and animals that inhabit rock pools.
  • To understand how rock pool plants and animals adapt to their changing environments.
  • To understand the impact of humans and environmental change on these micro-habitats.

Pre-Reading

  • To read the first chapter of The Shell Secret (Schools Programme only) One copy supplied.

  • Introduction to Sue Palmer, The Shell Secret and today's workshop objectives.
  • Why is our coast so special?
  • What are intertidal zones? Meet some of the creatures that live there.
  • Learn about some unusual survival strategies in our rock pools.
  • Weird and wonderful rock pool creatures.
  • The Shell Secret – healing powers of the coast.
  • Threats to our rock pools and why the coast is so important to us all.

Learning Outcomes

  • I can identify and name a variety of common plants and animals that inhabit rock pools.
  • I can describe some of their survival strategies.
  • I can list the threats to rock pool micro-habitats from both the environment and human behaviour.
  • I understand how to protect our rock pools.
